The following is written by Jennifer Pappas:

I was approximately two months shy of the end of my pregnancy when I found out that I had gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is diabetes that develops in pregnancy. It occurs when your body cannot produce enough insulin to keep up with changes in hormone levels. For many like myself, it is hard to detect without a test, so you may have it and not even know. Fortunately, gestational diabetes can be managed through diet, but in some cases, insulin is required. If not treated there can be serious implications. These include:

1) A baby with a higher birth weight ( where a cesarean section would be required)

2) High blood pressure and swelling (which can sometimes lead to premature birth)

3) The risk of both you and your baby developing type 2 diabetes in future.

Now, picture me at 28 weeks pregnant, being told that my diet requires a complete overhaul. Not exactly what someone with swollen feet who’s starving wants to hear? For me this meant practicing portion control, measuring and weighing what I was consuming, counting carbohydrates, staying away from sugary treats and incorporating daily walking after my meals. Not the easiest of things to implement after seven months of burger and poutine cravings. Not to mention my love for chocolate that’s existed since childhood.

Despite changes to my diet and as much planning as possible, I was exhausted, to say the least! Working and commuting until my 37th week presented a whole other set of challenges. The late-night cravings and all those times I stopped for a coffee and wanted a donut or my favorite, a Carmel pretzel, did not make it easy to stay on track!

What DID help me stay on track and what I’m so thankful for is the full line of PUR products. I have always been fairly conscious when it comes to what I put into my body so turning to PUR was a no-brainer. Their variety of gums are gluten-free, vegan, non-GMO, nut, dairy and aspartame free and diabetic friendly! I found that keeping PUR’s gum on hand, was just enough to ward off any cravings I was experiencing. It was also really convenient to pop in a piece of gum when others were tempting me with treats.

Spearmint was always my favorite flavor until I discovered how amazing the bubblegum and chocolate mint tasted. Who said I had to give up chocolate to enjoy the same flavor? Being diabetic friendly, I didn’t have to worry about sugar content or any artificial sweeteners that were potentially detrimental to me or my baby. I’m not only a fan of PURs gum though, their popcorn launched around the time I had received my diagnoses and I couldn’t have been more ecstatic! I’m a huge fan of all three flavors but my favorite by far is the Carmel and Sea Salt. Carmel is one of my favorite things and with my modified diet, I was still able to enjoy a whopping 3 ½ cups of PUR’s popcorn. This satisfied my cravings and ensured both me and baby were on track with a healthy pregnancy. Thank you PUR!
